WASHINGTON -- Newly sworn-in Sen. Roger Wicker was assigned Thursday to three Senate committees.

Wicker, R-Miss., will serve on the Armed Services Committee, the Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee and the Veterans Affairs Committee.

He was sworn in Tuesday to the Senate seat vacated late last year by Trent Lott.

Wicker said in a statement that his committee assignments put him in position to help influence important issues across the state.

"I asked to serve on committees that will have the potential to make a positive impact on Mississippi," Wicker said.

Wicker, first elected to the House of Representatives in 1994, was appointed by Republican Gov. Haley Barbour and hopes to win a special election for the seat.

Former Mississippi governor Ronnie Musgrove and former congressman Ronnie Shows plan to run for the seat.

A special election has been set for Nov. 4, but a lawsuit seeking to hold the election sooner is pending. The court decision could come as soon as Friday.
