SENECA, S.C. -- The mill that employed John Edwards' father when he brought the future presidential candidate home from the hospital stands shuttered at the edge of town here.

It closed in 2003, unable to withstand a growing wave of cheaper imports from China and other countries. Now, the mill is set for a rebirth that reflects the transition many former mill towns are making -- or attempting to make -- to an information-based economy.
