WASHINGTON -- The governors of Florida, Georgia and Alabama have rescheduled a meeting in Tallahassee to further discuss short and long-range plans on sharing water for Dec. 17.

Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne is also expected to attend the meeting, which had been set for Dec. 12. But it is being switched because of scheduling conflicts, says Florida Gov. Charlie Crist’s office.

Florida officials have objected to an interim plan launched late last month to reduce water flow from Lake Lanier in north Georgia into the Chattahoochee River, because of the repercussions downstream on water flow into Florida’s Apalachicola River. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers plan was proposed as a way to restock drought-stricken Atlanta’s water supply.

The tension between the states comes as the region faces what has been the worst drought on record.
