THURSDAY
Sen. John McCain is to accept the Republican Party presidential nomination tonight during primetime. His campaign had not announced other speakers by press time.

QUOTABLE
“What, after all, is a Democrat like me doing at a Republican convention like this?” said Joe Lieberman, the Democratic candidate for vice president in 2000 who is now an Independent. “The answer is simple. I’m here to support John McCain because country matters more than party.”

NEWSMAKER
Sen. John McCain, 72, would be the oldest American elected to a first presidential term -- a record now held by Ronald Reagan, who was two weeks shy of 70 on inauguration day.
McCain retired as a Navy captain in 1981 and joined the beer distributorship owned by his second wife Cindy’s family before running for Congress from Arizona.
He was a wrestler as a teenager at Episcopal High School, a private boarding school in Alexandria, Va.

FAST FACTS
- The RNC and other partners have assembled 80,000 comfort packages to send to Gulf Coast residents affected by Hurricane Gustav.
- The Minnesota Legislature passed a law in May allowing bars in the Twin Cities area to remain open until 4 a.m. during the convention – two hours longer than the state’s normal bar closing time.
- Harold E. Stassen, Minnesota’s 25th governor, ran for president nine times between 1948 and 1992.

NOTABLE
Sen. Jim DeMint, R-S.C., says he is “a recovering earmarker.” And he thinks vice presidential nominee Gov. Sarah Palin is too.
Palin has been touted as an anti-earmark reformer. But as a small-town Alaska mayor, she helped secure $27 million in federal earmarks.
DeMint said it’s easy to fall into the trap of bringing home federal dollars, but it corrupts the political system.
“I’m a teetotaler now where earmarks are concerned and Gov. Palin saw the same thing,” he said.
