English as the national language
Neither candidate supports making English the official language, both say immigrants should learn English. Obama has also said that American children should learn Spanish.
McCain: The Republican has said there is a “practical value to make English used by all Americans and all citizens and all who come here.”
Obama: The Democrat says he will expand opportunities for immigrants to learn English and take civic education classes.
Driver’s licenses
The two candidates differ on whether illegal immigrants should be allowed to receive driver’s licenses.
Obama: Supports allowing illegal immigrants to get driver’s licenses to bring immigrants “out of the shadows.” Obama believes taking a license exam would prod immigrants to learn the rules of the road, which would improve public safety. It would also provide better documentation of people living in the United States.
McCain: Has said little on the issue except that he opposes granting driver’s licenses to illegal immigrants.
Immigration raids
Neither has ruled out immigration raids, but both say raids have limited effectiveness.
Obama: Believes raids are ineffective, net few arrests and place burdens on immigrant families.
McCain: Calls raids a symptom of the immigration problem in the country, but says he will call for them if they are necessary to protect America’s borders.
