WASHINGTON -- Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Tennessee will share in an official regional inauguration ball with those from six other Southern states to be hosted by Barack Obama after he is sworn-in as president on Jan. 20th.
The Southern Inaugural Ball will also include those from Alabama, Arkansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas. It is to be held at the National Guard Armory in Washington D.C.
Meanwhile, Virginians will take part in a Mid-Atlantic regional ball, to include those from Maryland, Washington D.C., West Virginia, New York and New Jersey. It is to be held at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center.
The events, announced today by the presidential inauguration committee, are to be two of five regional balls to be hosted by Obama on the night of his inauguration. Obama also will host a separate ball for his home states of Illinois and Hawaii and a Youth Inaugural Ball.
Vice president-elect Joe Biden will host a ball for his home states, as well – Delaware and Pennsylvania.
The regional balls are an inaugural tradition that President-elect Obama will continue. Tickets will be available to invited guests for $150.
In addition, Floridians also are holding two “unofficial” galas. A sold-out “Sunshine and Stars 2009 Florida Inauguration Ball” will be held on the evening of Jan. 19 at the prestigious Corcoran Gallery of Art.
A second unofficial Florida event on the evening of Jan. 20 at the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of the American Indian on the National Mall is expecting to draw 500 attendees.
Here’s a list and locations of the other official inaugural balls announced today:
Eastern Inaugural Ball - Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Vermont, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands; Union Station
Midwest Inaugural Ball - Kansas, Indiana, Iowa, Minnesota, North Dakota, Nebraska, Ohio, South Dakota, Wisconsin and Missouri; Walter E. Washington Convention Center.
