The troop surge has created a window of opportunity for stability in Iraq, but only if leaders there take advantage of it, a Georgia senator said Thursday.

Sen. Johnny Isakson, R, visited Iraq for three days last week and said the troop surge has created safety. Isakson twice previously visited Iraq and was able to travel much more freely in the country on this trip.

“It is a remarkable difference,” said Isakson, who supported the troop surge.

The additional troops have pushed al-Qaida out of Baghdad and outside the city, he said.

Hopefully a new initiative targeting those al-Qaida strongholds will also be successful there, Isakson said.

The people of Iraq have also awakened to support both the Iraqi army and U.S. forces, he said.

He and two other senators on the trip – Norm Coleman, R-Minn., and John Cornyn, R-Tex. – stressed to Iraqi leaders the importance of stabilizing their governing structure and the safety of Iraq during this time.

In particular, he said, before planned troop withdrawals from Iraq and President Bush’s departure from office next year.

“I sense that they understand that urgency,” he said.
