WASHINGTON—Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine, declining to release terms of any potential settlement with families of the Virginia Tech shooting victims, said today it was “disappointing" one relative of a victim spoke publicly about proposed terms of an agreement. (Watch video of Kaine at right.)
Kaine said the state has reached no settlement with the families of victims of last April's Virginia Tech shooting and would not follow any artificial timelines to reach an agreement before the anniversary of the April 16 massacre.
An unnamed family member of a shooting victim told the Associated Press the state was offering families a settlement that included $100,000 and the opportunity to talk with the governor and university leaders about the shooting. In exchange families would agree not to sue Virginia, including the university, in relation to the shooting.
Kaine mentioned the positive work he did with the victims’ families on mental health legislation this past year three times, but he said it would be a challenge to reach an agreement that would please every single family involved in the shooting that left 32 people dead on the Blacksburg campus.
