WASHINGTON – Mississippi’s newest congressman was just sworn Tuesday, and his next campaign has already begun.
Democrat Travis Childers was greeted by applause from his fellow House members after he took the oath of office on the House floor.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Childers’ reelection in November will be high priority for Democrats. The 1st district in north Mississippi has long been a Republican stronghold. Childers defeated Republican Greg Davis 54 percent to 46 percent in a special election last week. The two will compete in the general election in the fall.
Childers said he is humbled by the trust voters have placed in him and plans to get to work.
“We want to hit the ground running and work for north Mississippi and do exactly what we were elected to do,” Childers said.
Childers said his priority will be addressing economic issues such as high gas prices and creating new jobs.
Pelosi said Childers will serve on the Agriculture Committee.
The House seat was vacated by Roger Wicker, a Republican who was appointed to the Senate seat previously held by Trent Lott.
Childers said his status as a member of Congress may make him a superdelegate with a vote at the Democratic National Convention.
But Childers said he has not committed to supporting either Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama.
“A lot can happen between now and the convention,” he said. “This may very well resolve itself by then.”
