Sens. Jeff Sessions and Richard Shelby of Alabama, both Republicans, voted against the Senate’s $838 billion economic recovery plan Tuesday. The House and the Senate passed different versions of the plan and must now hammer out differences before it reaches President Barack Obama’s desk.
Here’s what Sessions and Shelby said after Tuesday’s vote.
Sessions:
“It is clear that our economy is not performing well and I agree that government can play a role in restoring economic growth. The simple truth, however, is that the long-term costs of this stimulus plan outweigh its temporary benefits … and will result in a huge surge in the role of government in the economy.”
Shelby:
“This so-called stimulus package is a disgrace and represents a continuation of government’s unfocused response to our economic problems. Until we resolve the challenges facing our financial system, our economy will not recover and we will continue to waste the taxpayers’ money and steal from future generations.”
