Obama speaks from MLK’s spot
Obama speaking to the crowd.
The country, he said, faces enormous challenges, referring to the national economy and foreign wars.
“I won't pretend that meeting any one of these challenges will be easy. It will take more than a month or a year, and it will likely take many. Along the way there will be setbacks and false starts and days that test our fundamental resolve as a nation,” his draft remarks said.
Obama said he is given hope by what he sees when he looks across the mall.
The crowd is virtually silent as Obama's voice echoes across the mall.
Cheers erupt as he talks about moving forward with the help of those in the crowd.
Before he spoke, U2 and Bono rocked out on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial with "One", a song written about Martin Luther King, Jr. Amazing performance.
One thing to think about on this chilly day in D.C.: how much louder would the claps be if everyone wasn't wearing gloves?
Obama finishes his brief speech and the Mall erupts in chants of Obama. One more song here - "This Land is Your Land."
