With polls nationally and in key battleground states showing Barack Obama ahead, the McCain campaign is playing up the fear factor.
Republican running mate Sarah Palin accused Barack Obama in campaign speeches over the weekend of "palling around with terrorists who would target our country."
Various news organizations are reporting that she said she was referring to Obama's friendship with William Ayers, a 1960s radical who was a founder of the Weather Underground, which planned bombings of key buildings, such as the Pentagon and Capitol.
Obama, who was born in 1961, was a child when Ayers was involved with the organization. They met years later. Ayers is now a professor. Obama says he won't be "Swift Boated," and contends the McCain campaign is going negative because it has no new ideas on the economy and other problems facing the country.
