The Redskins are in New York, but Joe Gibbs is in St. Paul.

It’s sort of strange to see Joe Gibbs speaking to the GOP convention tonight. As a diehard Washington Redskins fan, I would have greatly preferred him to be standing on the sidelines at Giants Stadium, holding a clipboard and coaching the ‘Skins to a stunning victory over the Super Bowl champion New York Giants.

But he ended his second tour of duty as head coach of the Redskins last year, freeing him up to address delegates in St. Paul tonight.

Gibbs, who ran a NASCAR team between coaching stints with the Redskins, is here because he’s an evangelical Christian, and the crowd ate up his speech.

“It's a little awkward for me to put on a partisan hat. But, with all the media hype, I feel compelled to tell you where I stand. Tonight, I'm supporting ... the Washington Redskins,” he says. Big laughs.

As he speaks his team is behind 16-7 to the Giants in the 3rd Quarter.

Then he reveals who he’s really supporting.

“I believe that electing John McCain and Sarah Palin will spark a return to God's Word and a spiritual revival that will bring our nation together. God bless you, and God bless America,” Gibbs said at the conclusion of his speech.
