Convention organizers were worried that tonight's NFL opener between the Giants and Redskins would go into overtime or run long, potentially robbing the campaign of a substantial chunk of the TV audience, particularly in Virginia, where the Redskins are very popular.
One operative told the Washington Post today that an extended contest that bled over into McCain's scheduled speech time would be their "rain in Denver" scenario. That's a reference to the Obama campaign's worry that their open air party last week would be rained out.
There's a minute left in the game. My beloved Redskins are going to lose. And it appears that the campaign is waiting until the game wraps up before sending out the main attraction. Smart move, since it could bring in additional viewers who might not ordinarily watch, if they keep their TVs on after the game.
